Do You Need a Mole Check?

Northpoint Medical And Skin CentreNews

Book an Appointment with A Mole Clinic in Albany, North Shore Today for Early Detection

It may seem like scheduling a mole check on the North Shore is inconvenient or even a waste of time, but nothing could be further from the truth. Regular mole detection in Albany is an extremely important way to identify skin cancer early when it is still highly treatable. Self-exams are also essential because you are likely to be the first person who notices an unusual or changing mole. However, a trained skin cancer doctor knows what to look for and what may need further evaluation.

When to visit your Mole Clinic in Albany

There’s no set age for when you should begin regular skin checks. Skin cancer may be more common in older patients, but it occurs at all ages. Even young people can have potentially dangerous moles. At a minimum, you need a mole check when you notice a concerning mole, growth, or lesion. However, if you have a family history of skin cancer or if you have spent time sunbathing or using tanning beds, then you should stick to a routine of regular mole checks. Ask your doctor how often you should return; the answer will depend on your risk level and could range from every three months to every two years.

What’s Involved in a Mole Check?

Precisely what your skin check entails will depend on your history. Ideally, your doctor will check all areas of your skin, especially if you have a history of melanoma. Your doctor will scan your entire body using lights and magnifiers looking for any concerning marks. If anything does look worrisome, your doctor may use a dermascope, a device that allows them to see through the top layer of skin with a special light. This process typically takes between five and fifteen minutes. The doctor will be looking for any moles, freckles, or other marks that have concerning characteristics such as size, shape, and colouring. Melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma are the most common types of skin cancer.

What If Something Is Found?

The whole point of regular skin checks is the early detection of skin cancer. When caught in its early stages, skin cancer is often easily and completely treatable. Frequently, your doctor can remove cancerous moles right at the clinic. In the case of melanoma, your doctor will probably want to ensure that it hasn’t metastasised. If it has, a more aggressive treatment plan is needed.
